Professional Development Update – April 2017

 

Welcome to our monthly email identifying the development opportunities on over the next few months. Please circulate this email to colleagues working in your department, institute or school who may be interested in the opportunities we offer. This newsletter is also available on the CAPD’s website.

Professional Development Week of Learning

A last minute reminder that the Professional Development Team’s Week of Learning is taking place this week. Every day there will be opportunities to attend a number of Lunch and Learn sessions on a variety of topics or experience a coaching taster session. The team will be holding events at Mile End, Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square Campuses, so please come and join us at any of the events that interest you.

Lunch and Learn: Bring your lunch if you wish and enjoy a bite size session on a topic that interests you. No need to book; just turn up on the day. All QMUL staff welcome.

Coaching Tasters: We’d like to offer all QMUL staff the chance to attend a twenty minute coaching taster session, to help identify how coaching could support your career goals. Contact our team email address to book:  profdev@qmul.ac.uk.

Achievements

Congratulations are due this month to the following candidates who will receive certificates for the nationally recognised professional development qualifications they have completed through the CAPD:

ILM Level Two Award in Leadership and Management

  • Donna Rezkallah who works as    Senior Early Years Practitioner                           in the Estates and Facilities Directorate

ILM Level Three Award in Leadership and Management

  • Rebecca Pike who works as    Cell Sorting Facility Manager                              in Barts Cancer Institute


ILM Level Five Certificate in Leadership and Management

  • Catherine Ruffell who works as    Registry Processes and Data Quality Officer      in Council Secretariat

 

Planning for Retirement

This year’s Planning for Retirement course has been scheduled on the 16th and 17th May 2017. Any member of staff who is starting to think about when they might want to retire is welcome to attend the session. The aim of the session is to help participants plan for a healthy, enjoyable and financially stable retirement and to start to consider what their life might look like when they are retired.

Featured Course: Train the Trainer

This programme is for any member of staff who delivers training workshops or learning and development activities to colleagues or other groups of people or is interested in developing skills in this area. Successful completion of the course and the associated assessment activities will lead to a Level 3 qualification from the Open College Network. The course will help you with session planning, design, delivery and evaluation.

Key Benefits

  • Designed to help you as a staff member with responsibility for training colleagues
  • Build your skills, confidence and raise your level of proficiency
  • Share tips and ideas to develop best practice
  • Find ways to deliver stimulating learning experiences for hard to deliver topics
  • Deliver a learning and development session in a safe environment and receive immediate, focused and supportive feedback.

Participants must have the agreement of their line manager to attend the course and complete work during their working hours. Details of how to provide this are supplied on the course booking site following the link below.

Drop-in advice sessions

You are welcome to come to one of our weekly drop-in advice sessions which are open to all university staff if you want support with identifying and meeting any development needs you have or additional guidance on work you are completing as part of one of our learning programmes. There is no need to book in advance, just turn up on the day. The drop in session times can be viewed via the Professional Development team’s shared calendar (look it up as [shared] CAPD Profdev on the QMUL Outlook calendars) and are posted a month in advance.

We are also happy to run drop-in sessions at other QMUL locations for teams who have a number of people interested in speaking to an adviser. Contact us on profdev@qmul.ac.uk if you would like to discuss arranging a session for your team.
