Before working at QMUL, Ian worked as an Organisational Development Consultant at the University of Salford. He has also worked as a freelance consultant, and started his career in HR/Learning and Development with Royal Mail. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

The Professional Development Team within CAPD provide a range of interventions, advice and bespoke support relating to leadership and professional development for all staff at QMUL.

Their specific responsibilities include::

  • Design and delivery of leadership and management programmes, including accredited programmes (e.g. Institute of Leadership and Management)
  • Personal Effectiveness Programme
  • QMUL staff induction
  • Investors in People within Professional Services
  • Coaching and mentoring
  • Departmental, team and individual advice in relation to professional development opportunities for staff
  • High Potential Leaders’ Programme
  • Women into Leadership

Ian is primarily responsible for:

  • Leading and Managing the Professional Development team within CAPD
  • Overseeing all learning and development activities relating to leadership and professional development, and monitoring the quality, uptake and success of all
  • Working with leaders and managers at QMUL to support achievement of their objectives through effective professional development
  • Managing and advising on staff learning and development policy and provision
  • Ensuring that learning and development provision is aligned to and contributes to the realisation of QMUL’s Strategic Plan
  • Ensuring that the portfolio of programmes offered by the team are appropriate for QMUL
  • Identification and implementation of learning and development to reflect current trends and requirements
  • The oversight and commissioning/delivery of talent management programmes, mentoring schemes, inductions and accredited programmes to support effective leadership development
